U.S. congressional report finds Trump tariffs hurting American businesses along Canadian border

There has been a lot of talk about the impact that the U.S. trade disruption on Canada is having. Great to find a U.S. source report that tells it like it is.

President Donald Trump’s trade policies are hurting American businesses in every state located along the U.S.-Canada border that “rely on short-term visits by Canadians,” a new report says.

“This has disrupted diplomatic, economic, and trade relations between the United States and Canada – which in turn has hurt U.S. businesses that depend on visitors from Canada,” said the report, which was prepared by the Democrat minority of Congress’s joint economic committee and published this week.

In 2024, Canadian tourism contributed $20.5 billion to the U.S. economy and supported 140,000 American jobs.

The congressional report found that between January and October 2025, border state businesses saw far fewer tourists, higher vacancy rates and plummeting sales.
